Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

About Dr. Andrew Murray

Dr. Andrew Murray, DO, is a psychoanalyst-in-training and board-certified psychiatrist practicing in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He offers psychoanalytic therapy and psychiatric consultation via telehealth, with a particular interest in patients seeking deeper understanding of themselves and their recurring patterns.

Dr. Murray is currently a candidate at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. His interest in psychoanalysis began during residency at Tufts Medical Center, where he sought additional training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.

Over ten years of psychiatric practice informs his analytic work. After residency, he served as Psychiatrist-in-Charge at McLean SouthEast Hospital before joining Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, where he integrated psychodynamic perspectives in treating complex patients. He supervised psychiatry residents in psychotherapy and practice management, and was named Educator of the Year by the Mayo Clinic General Pyschiatry Residency Chiefs in 2024. He has held teaching faculty positions at Harvard Medical School, Mayo Clinic, and Medical College of Wisconsin.

His background as a psychiatrist allows him to offer integrated care when patients benefit from both psychoanalytic therapy and medication consultation, without splitting treatment between providers.

In his free time, Dr. Murray enjoys outdoor activities with his family, including biking, kayaking, hiking, skiing and coaching T-ball. He also enjoys exploring new restaurants, watching baseball and reading.

A thoughtful approach to mental wellbeing

Psychoanalytic work is an investment in understanding yourself more deeply. It typically involves meeting multiple times per week - a frequency that allows patterns to emerge and be explored in real time, not just discussed in retrospect.

All services are private pay and delivered via telehealth. Working independently of insurance allows for greater privacy, confidentiality, and flexibility in how we structure our work together. For patients who benefit from both psychoanalytic therapy and psychiatric consultation, I can provide integrated care without the complications of splitting treatment between providers.
